snakes!!

Hi;
I used to ride where there were rattlesnakes.  My mare would ignore them
completely.  One day we were riding along at a nice canter and suddenly
there was a sudde, furious rattling on our left, whereupon Teza, without
missing a beat, shifted us about five feet to the right, while turning
her head to look at it.  Turns out, it was a dark grey or black rattler,
rather pissy, that had rattled and then struck at us!  Missed us
completely.  I was so grateful to be riding a little, quick,
skinny-legged arab mare!  She never really spooked at them before or
after this...but she could detect a bear-smell three canyons away!
