I live in Iowa and it gets to subzero temps at times, with wind chills
occasionally of -50 degrees. Luckily not too often! But it definitely
gets cold here, and I've never had a problem with my water freezing
(when using a tank heater). I use the kind that sits on the bottom of
the tank, looks like a round coil. I had used floating tank heaters, and
sometimes would have a thin crust of ice at the top of the tank. The
ones that sit at the bottom seem much better for keeping the water
uniform temp. It's not warm by any means, but not icy cold either.
