Vaccine reactions- there can be many

RE: Vaccine reactions
There can be some subtle, some not so subtle, and some life
threatening reactions to some vaccines, or combination shots.
Some of the discomfort merely means the vaccine is working
and the immune system is responding.
But some reactions are adverse:
I currently have a horse that had a post (rabies) vaccination
seizure, who's reaction to any vaccine kept getting worse each
year. 2 vets were involved with this, and vaccine manufacturer
(and carrying or growing agents) were tracked, different ones
used, shots spaced out over weeks, etc, etc... We found
no correlation to anything. He just happenes to be one
of the 1/2% of horses that have severe post vaccination reactions.
A horse HR can be elevated after a series on vaccinations, and
or the muscles can be sore for 30 days
around the injection site. A horses gait can
look "off" 30-40 days after a tetnaus injection in the butt.
Whether the horse is allergic to the carrying or growing agent
of the vaccine, or whether the reaction is because of the response
mounted by the immune system (like with a 4 way vaccine) it's hard
to determine which it is.
Start keeping a log of all the Vaccines you give, their names
and the manufacturer, and any reaction your horse has. Look for
the subtle ones (like, is the neck sore a week later?)
Sensivity seems to be an individual thing with the immune system.
