Good point. Another good reason to teach them to load with the feed doors
closed, is the fact that every once in a while horses go nuts. I watched a
friend's horse try to use the open feed door as an emergency exit. The
mare's entire front end wound up in the feed manger, her head and neck were
out the feed door. She pretty much peeled hide off most of her front end and
we were totally perplexed as to how to get her the heck out of there. She
absolutely refused to budge from that awkward position and went into 'dead
horse' mode. We ended up giving her an injection of Ace and waiting it out,
she finally disentangled herself from the feed door/manger and got down. It
sounds funny now (and we actually laugh hysterically whenever the subject
comes up), but it was UGLY at the time. So, in my experience, teaching them
to load with the feed doors closed is a reallllllly good idea!
