Back in the late 1970's the Madonna Inn Ride, in San Louis Obispo, Ca., sported a $10,000.00 (could have been more) prize monies. Completion awards were a beautiful sterling silver belt buckle. My mare had an absess and couldnt go. I was kind of glad I didnt go after I heard how bad some things turned out. Quite a few local yahoos decided to try and win some of that money. They purchased cheap race horses, conditioned them for a little while and entered the race. It was truely "every man for himself" type of race. People got hurt, horses got hurt, I remember that there was at least one equine death reported. Seasoned endurance riders made bad mistakes not taking proper care of their horses. The trail was badly marked and there was almost no water. The heat, lack of water and the money turned the race into a disaster. The race was never held again. The press had a field day at that one. It was a sad day for enduance riding. I still hope that winning $$$$$ never becomes part of our sport. It is one of the few equine sports that is still pure. I showed for many years and became disillusioned by the politics and the Boggs types running the shows. Money, status and prestige just does'nt belong in endurance riding. OK, my fire extinguisher is ready so let 'er rip :-) gesa n clovis -----Original Message----- From: Bob Morris <bobmorris@rmci.net> To: DreamWeaver <karen@chaton.gardnerville.nv.us>; ridecamp@endurance.net <ridecamp@endurance.net> Date: Wednesday, October 06, 1999 10:00 AM Subject: RC: RE: Ride Results >Sorry my post that was just sent had a wrong date in it.
