Okay, here's my two cents worth on the subject (and I am a part-time
outfitter in AZ who regularly takes guests out for trail rides on my
horses).
NEVER ride a horse you are afraid of. They can pick up your emotion (which
<sounds> like it was the case here) and will run all over you. If you don't
have confidence in the horse, get off and find a new one. Life is too
precious and there are too many safe horses out there to risk injury on an
unsafe one. Even if it is a free or cheap horse. Even if it would
inconvenience someone to say "no." Even if you like the horse's personality
on the ground (consider a dog instead). Safe riding horses exist out there
(some even for lease) that will fit your level of ability. Find one.
