Re: Microchipped horses

I had both my horse and mule microchiped when I worked for a vet. the chip
should be placed along the left side crest of the neck in the nucal
ligament.(Im not sure I spelled that right). the site should be injected
with a local pain killer because the needle is very big. The chip is self
is just a little bigger that a grain of rice. That placement is according to
the manufacturer of the chip we used fron AVID. The vet ,however; didn't
have that information at the time mine were chipped, so mine are chipped in
the vaccination region of the neck on the left side. I have not had any
trouble with mine, but we chipped over 150 government horses and only two or
three failed. The chip is a great way to identify you horse if it ever get
stolen. I have heard that the reason that the chip is placed in the top of
the neck is because they now have scanners at some of the main packing
plants and when a chipped horse goes under that scanner before it is killed,
they have to verify ownership. so it might save a horse from salughter.
Also I had leased my horse to a lady for her daughter to show and she lost
all my medical recordsa nd the state Hauling card taht is required in New
Mexico to transport horses around the state. I had to have the brand
inspector use the microchip as identification That I owned the horse in
order to get a new card. In addition to my horses all my dogs are also
chipped. I would recommed it for anyone with horses or dogs. Especially if
your horse has no other identifying marks or brands. im going to have my new
ones done also, but we will have to use a different brand since we hve moved
and the vets here uses something different. I dont know how anyothers work
excet the AVID and Im very pleased withthat one. Any way there are
universal chip readers out now so you wont have to worry much about if
another scanner can read your chip.
