Heat/humidity - mgt. options
Diane Nelson safehavn@fast.net
While, in theory, it may seem reasonable to shorten the ride
distance, in practice it would not be possible in over 90% of
the cases - particularly here in the NE. Few rides have the luxury of convenient terrain
about which you could design close-in loops in the event of
possible changes due to extreme weather.
About all that ride management can do is extend the time (for
CTRs), provide additional water stations or encourage more on-
trail observations by the judges and management itself in
order to identify potential problems.
The situation would have to be extraordinary indeed to justify
to the sanctioning body (ECTRA in the NE) any significant changes
in distance covered. And how do you decide how much to lop off?
One mile, five miles? When do you decide?
The best defense under these conditions is a knowledgeable
rider, one tuned into his/her horse so that problems can be
identified well before they reach a crisis stage.
