I had to chuckle at this one!!  My husband & I were driving home from a
field trial (pointing dogs), & admiring our two ribbons:  the first ones
the dogs had earned in a recognized trial.  We did a quick calculation
in about 5 minutes, and figured that each one of them had cost us over
$10,000!  We're still one jump ahead of the sheriff, though, and two
litters of puppies and many fine pheasant dinners later we still
wouldn't trade a penny of it.
