re poultices for founderHi,
Hi,
I posted about the poultice. Here's what I did. I used bandage cottons cut
into squares the size of the bottom of her foot. I used 30x arnica, two
dropper-fuls, drizzled over the square. Then I dampened the whole thing
with witch hazel, not so wet that it was dripping, just damp. The square
was placed over the frog and sole with no wrinkles. Put gauze and vet wrap
over the whole foot, being very careful not to have any wrinkles over the
sole. Put an easyboot over the whole thing. Change every other day or
every three days. It smells funky, so don't be alarmed. As far as the
magnets were concerned, I used Norfields for the lower leg and kept them on
about 12 hours a day. I've read that they can be left on 24 hours if needed
[(Mike Plumb's) Horseman's journal]. As she got better, we discontinued the
use of the magnets but kept her in fuzzy wraps to keep her legs warmed. (It
was winter). My non-scientific theory (the ol' one rat trial) is that the
increased circulation to the lower leg and then foot allows the poultice to
draw the inflammation out. It works for abscesses, too.
