Scrambling in trailer

A friend of mine just had a trailer problem last Friday.  She has hauled
her mare lots of times.  The mare is usually bad while stopped, but okay
while moving.  This time she scrambled in the trailer so badly that she
ripped off her shipping boots and tore off a shoe.  She came out of the
trailer with 4 bloody legs!!!  She had to go to vet to get a
tranquilizer to get the horse back home again.  Does anyone have
suggestions to get a horse over scrambling in a trailer?
