Hi, I tend to agree with you that a month in a stall will give them a bit of an advantage but...! Remember, the horses belong to someone else that you are doing a favor for. Good-hearted favors can end up messy if things go wrong. If one of her horses got hurt or coliced in the stalls, you could be up a creek. People these days are just too law-suit happy. Also, if they're that bad, you may want to put everything you plan to do in writing and have her sign some sort of liability release in case anything happens to the horses. The release may discourage any potential lawsuits. Bringing back malnourished horses is a crap-shoot. You can get them looking good only to have them rupture an intestine due to damage from parasite overload. Can you leave them out, then herd the two of them into the enclosed pen or the stalls to eat? For the first week or so, this could be tough but when they learn to like the food and know where the dinner pail is, it will get easier. Good luck. You are very generous and it sounds like you have a nice place with pasture, pens, arena and stalls!
