Re: eggbar shoes
Any shoe can cause contraction if not put on properly...if the shoe is put
on improperly and restricts motion of the foot it can cause problems. Many
farriers will use all of the nail holes in a shoe and those last nail holes
toward the heel can cause the shoe to act like a cast and may cause
contraction. My husband/farrier uses only 6 (sometimes only 4) on our
horses and the majority of those he shoes. Some clients ask for all 8
nails, he explains his reasoning for 6 and if they insist, he will do it.
We have had good luck with just putting just 4 nails in, rarely losing a
shoe. Please keep in mind when dealing with your farriers that it is not
how long or whether a shoe stays on that makes a good farrier (some people
immediately assume if a shoe keeps coming off, it's the farrier's fault,
he's no good, etc.)...it is how cleanly the shoe is pulled with the least
amount of damage. A good farrier can use the same nail holes to reset a
thrown shoe! Just had to add that little extra info. Forgive me for going
off track!
