While not Quarter horses, Haflingers certainly are every bit as heavily
muscled, if not more so. There has been a very successful purebred
Haflinger that has done 50's down in the Southern California area. I've
seen a photo of him and he is not lightly built.
Purebred Haflingers are used for distance in Great Britain, one making the
British team a few years ago.
I recall in the Tevis stats that a Percheron/Arab cross finished.
It takes longer, slower to condition, they take different management and
they may not perhaps all be Top Ten material but in many cases I think they
are capable -- the tiny feet fad might be much more a detriment than the
heavy muscle.
