reins and martingales

this sounds like a silly question but what is the easiest way to get the
reins out of the rings in the running martingale? I'm riding a new green
horse and have started using the martingale on him at least temporarily-
for now have homemade rope reins braided back on themselves around the
snaps for the bit. managed to get them thru the rings but they won't come
out w/ out a major effort. works well for keeping the rings from sliding
up and getting caught on the bit but if I want to get them out in a hurry
(like maybe to use them as a lead rope across a scary stream or something)
cant do it.

I'm thinking about getting some rubber stoppers you can put on leather or
biothane reins and using them instead but still have the problem of getting
the reins out of the rings.

What do you all suggest? ride w/ extra lead rope? split reins?
What is the quickest and easiest thing to do?
thanks
