SADDLE SHIMMING
I have noticed palm-sized dry spots just behind
the withers indicating excessive pressure. It is
worse with a heavier pad.
I eliminated much of the problem by using a thinner
pad and a folded bath towel under the center of the
saddle.
The saddle supplier (Thornhill) suggested reflocking,
but using a pommel pad temporarily during prime
riding season.
I see a pommel pad listed in the Dover catalog,
oval shaped with removable foam insert. It seems to
me that this would worsen the problem as with a heavier
pad.
At a centered riding clinic recently, I found it more comfortable
for me to have the saddle slightly higher in front. This shifts my
weight and feet back slightly, which it would seem would
reduce pressure on the withers.
The Miller catalog lists a Roma Lift Front Pro Tek Comfort pad
of Open Cell Foam. Valley Vet Supply (and others) list the Wintec
Comfort Pad also of Open Cell Foam. Has anyone had experience
with these products (or this problem)?
