Riding my horse 12 miles, then lining him up like he's in a show and not
letting him eat is bad horsemanship in my opinion. I have to ride with
my stirrups at least 1" shorter to allow for Kaboot's BIG trot. Can
someone on the ground tell me when they're "just right"? Anyone who
looked at where I have my stirrup buckle and how it's turned would swear
that it's backwards and going to rub a hole in me, but it's perfect. My
horse's best gait is 8mph, regardless of everybody else's "best gait". >>
Hi Angie, luckily, people have learned a lot (maybe from endurance riders)
since the days of not letting your horse eat at P&Rs. I always let my horse
eat, he's HUNGRY! It may be just a 2 day 50, but it's still 50 miles and he
needs food. I don't know of any horsemanship judges who would criticize
where you have your stirrup leather buckle (I have mine run down to the
bottom, near the stirrup). Never had that come up at a competition. I also
haven't competed in your neck of the woods either, so maybe things are really
different there! Regarding the IAHA ride -- that's another bucket all
together. Don't you find that when there's serious money involved, people
will tend to get just a little, teensy bit more competitive? Not sure what
the protests were, but that is not a typical CTR.
