Heidi,
If you do get his teeth done, consider finding an equine dentist. 
Nothing against vets floating teeth, but an equine dentist does teeth
all the time, has special schooling and sometimes more advanced
equipment than the vet.  Our dentist is wonderful...we get an education
every time he comes out.  He loves to show us what he's doing.  I never
knew there was so much to it!  Ask your horsey friends for referrals.
