In addition to giviing your hard keeper high density foods, have you had his teeth checked? If this horse needs a dental float it could affect his ability to digest the expenisive (or not so expensive) feeds. Also, it would'nt hurt to have your vet do a fecal egg count to be sure your de-worming program is effective for this horse. Checking these may help your hard keeper make better use of his feed. Hope this helps!
