In Foal

AERC does not specifically address in foal mares. UNECRA does and says that
they can compete until 6 months. At that time they are about half way along
and they show pregnancy. I rode my pregnant mare all last season on 25
CTRs. She has been a distance horse these last 5 years with about 2000
miles prior to that. I was warned by the owner of the stallion that at
about 8 weeks she would no longer have great recoveries ( like down to her
resting rate), but that she would do fine. This from a very experienced
ride vet. It was also felt that she should continue in the activity that
she is used to. I made very sure she was rested on the rides to and from
the sites and if it was a long drive we stopped and unloaded her and offered
H2O every 3-4 hrs. I also rode her lightly all winter until 6 weeks before
delivery. Her foal was born without any problems and seems to be perfect in
every way.
