Re: RC: RE: "In foal" and competing
Eight yrs ago when I bred my mare, my vet advised me not to compete her ---
the biggest risk to the foal was dehydration. I did do a 15 mile CTR 2 weeks
after she was bred as I felt she was in good shape to do that short distance
& it was a 20 min trailer ride. At the time, Kadance was 5 and was doing 25
mile CTR's. I had met my vet when she was judging a CTR, so I thought she
knew what she was talking about.
I did continue to ride Kadance, to try to maintain her conditioning thru the
pregnancy. Four months after she had the foal, she was back in competition.
A friend of mine did CTR's (25's) with her mare when she was a few months in
foal, and the mare had a healthy foal.
Here in the mid-Atlantic region the weather can get really hot & humid. I
was probably overly paranoid, but Kadance was not a 50 mile horse back then,
& I had another horse to compete with that made the decision to not compete
Kadance easy.
