Although AERC does not address the subject of pregnant mares specifically,
the rules state that the rides are open to "all breeds and types" of equines,
and the only limiting factor in the rules is a minimum age requirement.
Many mares have competed successfully and safely during pregnancy, and I have
vetted and ridden pregnant mares as far along as 8 months.
I agree with Bob that many mares are better off continuing the activity that
they are used to--I would not necessarily START a pregnant mare on an
endurance career, but neither would I STOP one who is already actively
competing simply because she becomes pregnant. Pregnancy is a natural
state--it is not an illness!
