Re: Question about "second sweat" from Barb Peck
There's probably no problem physically with the horse still being hot, he's
just not cooled out after 20 minutes of walking. The muscles generate a
tremendous amount of waste heat as another "by-product" of exercise and it
takes awhile for that heat to be pulled away from the muscles by the
circulating blood, and then transported to the surface through either
respiration or sweating. If the horse is heavier muscled, has a good fat
cover or is being put up in a stall with little air circulation, then that's
going to contribute to slower heat dissipation as well.
You might suggest really slowing down the speed of the ride the last few
miles, walking or even hand walking in, then cooling out as usual if she
can't spend any more time hand walking back at the barn.

RE: Second sweat
17 year old Morgan, who'd ridden alot fo miles (probably
1000/season).
The last 2 rides he's been on with us (probably 15 or so miles)
sweats up more than any other horse. After the ride the owner
washing him down and usually stalls him after about 20 minutes
of walking.
2 hrs. later, this horse's skin is cool, but he's wet on the chest and up
one side of the neck. It's got to be sweat, and it's
indicating he's under stress somehwere, Right?
What does second sweat indicate? Metabolic or muscle problems
or both?
Barb
