The best way to get involved is to volunteer at rides.  You get to
see so much - types of tack, the routines people use to care for their
horses and lots of opporunities to ask questions of lots of exper-
ienced people.  The stories traded around at the vet stops while wait-
ing for horses to show up are priceless and entertaining!
