Yea, it is no fun. But I've been on both ends and am currently selling a
horse and buying one too. And I've heard stories about the buying side
too and personally experienced flying across state to see a horse and
finding out that it wasn't what was described to me. That was an
expensive trip and a waste of my time.
Sellers have to screen over the phone. Take charge of the conversation
and I guarantee that you can weed out most of the people who waste your
time. Ask the right questions. Be direct. "Are you ready to buy right
away?" is a good screening question. "Tell me exactly what you are
looking for?" is another. I used to sell real estate, and you use the
same techniques to screen for real buyers vs. looky loos.
As a buyer, I always tell the seller exactly what I am looking for and
since they know the horse and it's personality, they usually have a good
idea if that particular horse will match my needs. I'm cautious when I
talk to non-endurance people as many of them believe that endurance
people "ruin" horses and don't want to sell to you.
