Heeheehee - ticks falling out of trees!!! Ticks are ground dwellers, and
while they do climb short shrubs and tall grasses, I've never had one
pounce on me from an overhead branch before! I've met deer-ticks and
dog-ticks, but never a cougar-tick ;^)
Horses get them on the forelocks from grazing, and on their tails from
the ground.
My horses live in a heavily dog-tick infested bushy area, and for every
one tick I'll find on their bodies (from the legs on up), I'll find
about 30 in their tail and the odd one in their mane and forelock.
During the really heavy tick season, I will wash their tails in a dip
solution for parasites - that keeps them off for quite a few days and
kills any I might have missed.
An interesting point - one of my three horses has a very high tail
carriage, much more than the other two, and he hardly ever gets ticks in
it.
