carrying a crop

Most notorious example: Angel Cordero Jr. and Genuine Risk in
the 1980 Preakness. As they turned for home she was coming
up on the outside of Cordero's horse. He pulled his horse
out into the middle of the track, carrying her with him. When
she still didn't quit, he took his whip and windmilled it
right in front of her face. It was thought at the time
that he was actually beating her over the head with it, but
careful review of the tapes showed he was just waving it
in front of her face. To win the race, she would have had
to run straight through his whip.
And he knew damned well what he was doing!
