Carrying (using) a crop
I'm sure there is a place and time for using a crop, but I will say
this: For many people, having one in the hand leads to less
discriminate use. By this I mean not noticing when the line has been
crossed from "righteous response" (eg to aggression) to "punishment
instead of training". This is also one line between good horsemanship
vs force.
I would suggest that a person instead carry one suspended from the wrist
by a loop. It's just a simple little psychology, but it really can make
a difference. It's still there for the horse to see, but it's not in
hand for reaction use. Lif
