training question
Hi Sandy,
Shorten your inside rein so that if he moves off, he only goes in a circle
around you. Put your foot in the stirup and swing on as he comes around.
Continue the circles once your on, then back him, turn him from side to
side etc., anything but move straight away. You don't move out till he
stands quietly once your on, no matter how long it takes doing small
circles etc. Continue this always when you mount and remember to have
patience and be persistent. When you go to dismount, turn him, back him
circle him, whatever until he realizes you're not off till he is still.
Often horses start this 'cause we fool around when we are mounting and
dismounting. Another cause can start when we drag ourselves up like a sack
of flour. Be light and spring on. When he gets better, use a mounting
block - will save his back. Hope this helps and good luck.
