I am so happy I hobble trained my mare. Sunday while clearing and searching trail for my ride my mare got wrapped in barb wire both front legs. 2 strands tight one in front and second wire behind the pastern. She stood with out moving having stoped dead the moment she got caught until my riding buddy could cut her free with his leatherman. If she had of fought the wire I am sure it would have striped both legs beyond repair. We were lucky not even a nick or drop of blood. Now I am not a trainer but this worked for me. First I put a hobble on one leg and taught her to lead with one hobble. Repeat other leg. Don't rush it takes a long time to train and a few minutes to screw up. Then I tied up one leg bend at knee and slip on a belt. Repeat other leg until they just stand there. My mare never fought. I think it is because I spent so much time just holding up her feet first. Then I hobbled her and she didn't do anything. Just stood still until I took them off. Work in a round pen with good footing so if they go down they don't land on hard ground. I am sure there are many ways better then this but it worked for me.
