running shoes

I am trying to find out for a friend what kind of shoes the ride and tie 
people use.  He hasn't been able so far to find anything that is comfortable 
to ride in and then to run in on our sandy trails......all I know is that I 
will leave the running part to him. Thanks for any help we can get.
