FWIW, I've always suspected that a fast extended trot and long-term
soundness were somewhat incompatible. From my own experience, Kahlil
(at 14.2) never had a long extended trot. He would switch to a canter
at about 12 MPH, even slower if he was tired -- but his canter was
very efficient and he could do it all day. I feel that helped him
stay sound so many miles and years.
