New Foal & Problems
Hi all,
My mare had her foal last night at 11:30pm. I was
watching from the door when suddenly she jumped up
and start snorting and looking at the foal. I ran over
and pulled the sack off the baby's head, and rubbed
and dried her off until she was alert. Baby was born with her
feet tucked under but the head was first. The vet and I feel
that the abrupt jump caused the mare to retain part of
the placenta which she expelled about 7pm tonight on
her own. Noticed before this that she was not feeling well
and had already called the vet.
Vet has treated her with Banamine and oxytocin and left
me with some bute. I have heard that retaining a piece
of a placenta can be very bad for the mare. She seems to
be feeling better and was eating hay last I checked.
Am worried as I have waited 10 yrs for this mare to have a
foal as she has been my endurance horse. She is 16yrs
old and this is her 2nd foal. Last one was 10 yrs ago.
Any one having a similiar experience would love to hear the
outcome.
