Then why don't we just drop the whole thing, get back to "the best horse
wins" mentality. At the competition where this pony stood for BC, there were
only two really good horses, the pony and the grey that won BC. Don't get me
wrong, I would have loved to win the BC with the pony, BUT, the grey that did
win looked real good also. The point is that the pony, due to the weight
penalty, was awarded 5th out of the 7 that stood for BC. He clearly, and I
mean clearly, was either 1rst or 2nd. Anyone there can vouch for this. The
weight thing should either be dropped or made more fair for all.

Actually the published data would indicate very strongly that this ratio is
also not a good indicator except under certain specific circumstances, not
across the board. The only weight parameter that statistically (I know,
statistics is a dirty word) indicated anything was the body weight of the
horse itself, in that as bodyweight increased, the incidence of lameness
increases. And even then, there were certain circumstances when rider
weight contributed to that and others when it didn't. So it would be pretty
hard to come up with a workable formula/protocol that fairly judged
competitors that took weight into consideration.
