When I first started riding seriously again after a long
absence, I weighed approximately 35# to 40# more than I do
now. I lost quite a bit of weight over several years. I am
clearly a much better rider now than I was then. Obviously I
have quite a few more riding miles on me, but dropping
weight also made a *huge* difference. However, I'll go out
on a limb and say that for me, it wasn't the weight as much
as it was the improved balance. It's easier for me to ride
balanced when I don't have as much weight to keep track of.
Just for reference, depending on the saddle I use, I'd be
either a lightweight or a heavyweight... I'm right on the
edge.
So, while weight may make a slight difference, the rider's
ability and fitness certainly must *far* outweigh (like the
pun?) the effect of the actual pounds. I'd vote for getting
rid of weight divisions too.
