Yes. You have to also consider the frequency of a particular bloodline in
the gene pool. For instance, a popular show bloodline that is pumping out so
many foals that they are readily available in the classified ads and through
rescue may be extremely well represented on the circuit and may produce a few
winners just by the law of averages. By the same token, many of the older
lines that really excel at the sport are only a very small percentage of the
Arabian gene pool. The fact that a line is rare in the breed but quite
common at the top of our sport speaks volumes compared to a line that may
produce some winners but is available on every street corner. To figure out
the difference, you also have to look at the failures and run THEIR
pedigrees, and see what they have in common. That's what I love about having
nearly two decades behind me as a ride vet--I have watched the successes AND
the failures, and it is truly fascinating to see how many of the failures are
related, too, and how many individuals in a particular line tend to fail in
the same way. Sure wish I had had a number cruncher following me around all
these years...
