I'm not an exercise guru or anything, but I've learned that simply
changing leg position & stretching on horseback helps my knees a lot. When
we're walking quietly, I'll drop my stirrups and let my legs hang as long
as I can, letting the weight of my feet & boots sort of pull down &
stretch my knee joints. I do circles with my feet to stretch my ankles.
I will do knee-bends by drawing my feet up behind me & nearly touching
Lakota on the hips (you have to get the horse used to this feeling <g>),
then drawing them up in front of me with my feet on his shoulders and my
knees in the air. Obviously I don't do these on the first loop of a ride!
But they seem to help a lot after 20 miles if I can do these exercises
every 5 miles or so.
