rails to trails
Hi, Everyone!
I live in Mineral Wells, Texas,
about 45 miles west of Fort Worth. Last summer our rails to trails opened from
Mineral Wells to Weatherford. The portion that runs through the town here is
paved, where horses are not allowed, but from the state park to Weatherford is
crushed gravel. I have ridden all the way to Weatherford and back (about 14 or
15 miles, one way). The crushed gravel is nice, no problem. Horses have the
right of way. Printed rules say to walk only, but I talked to the powers that
be, who said trotting was fine as long as we slowed down meeting hikers and
bikers.
I train at the Lake Mineral Wells
State Park equestrian trail, an 8-mile loop with water, hills, etc. After that I
found the rails to trails rather unchallenging. It was beautiful country, but
the trail was flat except for a few switchbacks at our end. I use it when I want
to add distance to my usual work. There is a $4 fee for equestrians for one day.
Yearly passes are available for $25, I believe.
I was involved in getting the rails
to trails corridor near Corinth, TX opened when I lived there. It was also
crushed gravel. I think R-T-T is a worthwhile organization, and if equestrians
stay involved and give support and opinions, it could benefit all of us.
