Re: RC: Need help with panicky horse
I have had several horses in the past that pull and it is a dangerous and
annoying problem. I will use a rope halter made from two strands of climbing
rope. These halters do not break (there are no metal parts to break). I use a
strong lead shank and tie the horse up and leave. Not too far, but far enough
that the horse does not associate me with the situation. I pay attention to
the horse. The horse will pull but rather than getting it's desired affect of
breaking free it finds itself still tied. The horse will eventually test its
being tied up less and less. Most horses will continue to be a puller but will
do it very infrequently. Once a puller I will always use a rope halter ,strong
lead shank and tie to something solid, on them.
I also use these halters when working with young or green stock so they never
learn the satisfaction of breaking free.
Some people will tie a lariat around their belly and then through the halter.
They then tie it so when the horse roars backwards it comes into play and they
feel the rope get tight around the belly. I find that with lots of horses this
will only work if you tie them up with the lariat all the time. I do not like
this method.But thats my opinion.
Good luck
