paring of sole and frog
As always, I came in on the tailend of a conversation that I wish I had
followed when it first started. Someone (was it Barb?) mentioned that they
never have their farrier pare off the frog...and (correct me if I'm wrong)
just let it slough of on it own. Do I have this correct? I would really
like to be further enlightened on this, and the reasonings behind it, as
well as not touching the sole (did i get that right too?). I have a farrier
now who insists on doing both; i think it's because he deals mainly with
high speed show horses. If it's a matter of traction and cushioning for
the hoof, I see a great deal of sense in this. For those of you who
subscribe to this method, what is your opinion of full pads on a horse?
Does it serve to act in the same manner? Beneficiary? Or a negative
impact? My horses don't have full pads, but I do have a mare who is very
"ouchy", and I am wondering if it's the farrier job...or if she just has
ultra-sensitive feet. Nonetheless, I'd like to hear further information on
the non-paring of sole and frog (if, indeed, I caught that information
correctly in the first place).
