Iron Supplements?
My 19-year old gelding has been diagnosed as "mildly anemic"
(6.34 mll/cmm out of a normal range of 7.00-12.00) and the vet
is recommending iron supplements. Evidently this is fairly
common in older horses.
The standard iron supplement appears to be Red Cell. However,
Red Cell contains lots of other vitamins and minerals in
addition to iron (and the B vitamins) that I'd just as soon
not get be getting. In particular, it contains yucca, which
at the recent ECTRA conference we were informed would cause
a positive drug test as an anti-inflammatory agent.
What iron supplements exist that largely confine themselves to
supplying iron (and maybe the B vitamins)?
I would also prefer the supplement in powdered form rather than
liquid.
Thanks in advance,
Linda B. Merims
