Buying used equipment

I have a question about buying used equipment. If I wanted to buy a used
saddle let's say from someone who advertised it for sale on the Endurance.net,
how would I go about it? Obviously, I would contact the person by phone or e-
mail to see if it was what I wanted. Then would I send them the money and they
would send me the saddle? What if the seller didn't deliver? What if the
buyer's check bounced (I'm not saying mine would <g>)? Who pays the postage?
What if the saddle was not as it was described or didn't fit my horse? Anyone
with any experience (good or bad) with this please give me some advice.
