>Good post but unfortunately the biggest trouble of riding up front is
>that>there is normally someone who wants to win.
Are you sure a person who has never ridden in the front understands ride
etiquette? Maybe she was doing things that are considered rude and
didn't realize it, thus bringing on the other riders' behavior. There's
nothing quite so irritating as a newcomer with blood in their eye...even
if the horse can handle it. Maybe that wasn't the case this time, but
it's happened before.
The best route in most cases is just TELL a person if they're doing
wrong. I offered to share my bucket of water that was on the trail with
several riders who were racing me for the front. A newcomer who was
running up front with us. She let her horse drink half the bucket, and
then was just trotting off. I would have let her go and hated her the
rest of my life. Nina Gibson handled it much better. She yelled, "Hey,
you get back here. You drink Angie's water and then trot off and leave
her and she'll beat the hell out of you!" She stopped and fell all over
herself apologizing. Turned out to be a really nice lady, just had no
idea what to do and what not to.
