Dumb question # 687

Beet pulp is made from sugar beets, right? We don't have those here.   What
happens if you feed horses regular beets, other than purple poop, that is.
Someone told me that any old beets were good for them, but I've never heard
of regular beets being used.  Or is this an aesthetic thing?
