Linda,
I got a biothane tube type crupper (for lack of bette description) from Teddy
Lancaster at runningbear.com almost a year ago. It has a kind of loopy oblong
shape that conforms to the shape of the horse's tail, & being a tube, it has
no sharp edges to cut around the tail. The tubed loop connects to flat
biothane that lies over the croup. There's a buckle on the top of the croup
that allows you to adjust the length of the crupper & to undo it to get it off
from around the tail. The buckle doesn't seem to rest on the horse as it's
raised up just a bit as the crupper angles up to attach to the back of the
saddle.
I keep mine fairly tight & both my horses don't seem to be bothered by it. I
always use it whenever I ride (usually try to do at least 50 miles a week,
altho my terrain is rolling, at best, with only occasional short steep hills),
and I have had no rub marks nor any hair loss around the tail.
My mare is a bit heavy on the forehand going downhill, & I worked with her for
a year on collecting/helping her to get her butt under herself
down the hills. She did get much better & improved her agility & speed, so I
think you are on track there.
Good luck,
Nancy

Kadance (whaddya mean, I can go downhill just fine if it's on the way home!)
