side-pulls

I've just purchased a side-pull bridle made of mountain climbing rope (with
reins, I think). My concern is that I've never used one.... I've ridden my
mares in hackamores, but I've always ridden Vic in a snaffle. Would anyone
have any recommendations as to how to change him over to the side-pull?
Also,
what kind of control does one have in these? Any other comments? :-)
