Hi Kerry, In my opinion a 25 miler is not an endurance ride (after all what
exactly are you "enduring"?). You should not be "racing"; the LD's are
designed to bring young horses and inexperienced riders along so they can
compete in endurance. I think that the AERC policy regarding LD is very sound
and puts the horse before the rider's ego which is to be commended. Good for
you if your horse wins a 25 miler, but let's see you in a couple of years
doing 50's on the same horse (let alone 100's) and finishing with a sound,
happy horse. I'm pretty sure that this is a "flammable" comment, but so be it
-- I applaud AERC's philosophy regarding limited distance and NOT supporting
the racing of these young/inexperienced horses. There is a fundamental
principle here that seems to get overlooked now and then. We're talking
endurance vs. a virtual "sprint". My vote goes to endurance every time --
that is where the true sport begins (in my opinion).
