I'm a new member of AERC, having just
joined as a result of volunteering at
a couple of riders. I'm also a lurker
to ridecamp who seldom speaks up. This
subject has really called to me. All of
the debate as to the letter of the rule
aside (and I do appreciate Steph's clarification of it), I am fully in
support of the Ride Managers on this. I
really don't care about the insurance
issue, we in America depend too much on
insurance and law suits, what concerns
me is physical safety of the other
riders and horses. If the lady with the
stallion wishes to risk her life with
a miss-behaving horse so be it. I don't.
I appreciate the ride managers probably reluctant decision to ban someone and their horse because they did not want
to see someone injured! I personally
would feel great mortification if my
horse offered injury to another. Surely, if show horses can maintain
their manners, so can ours. And please
don't tell me that they are too hot
blooded or that it's a race. Thoroughbreds get ruled off the track
for that type of behavior.
I'm with Dr. Heidi on this. Commonsense
dictates that the ride managers do what
is necessary to provide as safe a ride as possible. There are enough variables
that cannot be controlled. A poorly
mannered stallion can be.
