Thought those of you who are either
still dealing with the upper respiratory
"bug' that has been making the rounds and those of you who would like to prepare against it, should hear this. One of the people whose horses came down with this infection had it go through all 8 of their horses. The oldest mare who has not left their property in several years became ill and developed a large sub-mandibular abscess that their vet lanced and sent in a "virgin" culture to CVD, the California veterinary diagnostic lab, the culture came back Strep. equi, this is the organism found in strangles infections. This is not to say this is what all of the horses have had since it has not fit the "typical"
strangles pattern. The other interesting thing is that the 2 clients of this vet that went to the ride, only one of them came down with it. The one client whose animals did not get sick, had regularly vaccinated against strangles. If any of you know of horses that did become ill and had been vaccinated for strangles this year it would be interesting to share.
Good luck! Anita and "Sam" who I may get to finally ride this weekend!!
