An easy canter. Often a horse's pulse will drop when going from a very fast
trot to an easy canter. It also changes which muscles are being used and
gives the horse a chance to stretch out. It also improves attitude later on
in a 100 miler. I would not recommend a gallop since this would be anaerobic.
I think it is best to avoid the anaerobic state in 100 milers. I have
finished about 30 100 milers, but I never win.
